Car clock repair
Car clock repair is not all that difficult. Most car clocks are actually spring wound clocks that make use of a mechanical assembled spring and gear movement. However, car clocks have unique features in that they are designed to run for a couple of minutes before having to be rewound. Also, these clocks work on a 12 volt winding mechanism that is actuated by solenoids.
In most cases, car clocks suffer from burned wires in the solenoid’s outer wraps. This normally occurs when the car has been sitting unused for a long enough time for the battery to die away. Another reason is that the battery is not able to provide the full 12 volts and thirdly, car clock repair is required when the voltage provided is insufficient to get the solenoid working even though some amount current continues to flow. In fact, if the contact points remain closed it could heat up the wires to a point that it burns up.
Car clock repair is also required in case the contact points are unable to complete the circuit because of dust or corroded points. To start the car clock repair process, one must diagnose the problem, disassemble the car clock and then affect required repairs.
Remove the car clock
The first step is to check the wiring and fuse to ensure that the clock receives the required 12 volts. If it is receiving the required voltage but still does not work, then you will need to take the car clock out. Before opening its case, be sure to check for continuity in the circuit. If the circuit is complete then you can rule out that the points are not good. In such instances, open up the only car clock repair required is to clean and lubricate your car clock.
Mostly, an open circuit is the biggest problem with a car clock. If you notice that the circuit is open then you will need to continue investigating. Chances are that the wiring on the solenoid is burnt or there is a problem with a stuck mechanism and the points failed to close.
Once the car clock has been taken out of the car it is time to affect required car clock repairs. Place it on a workbench so that you can visually inspect it to see if the contact points are in fact closed. If they are not, simply close them and then inspect the wiring on the solenoid. To close the points, simple release the clock’s pawl. Next, clean up the points and inspect them for continuity. If the circuit closes you may conclude that the solenoid wiring is in order and so you will only need to clean as well as lube it.
If the circuit does not close, then the problem is with the solenoid wiring which must be replaced. If the only car clock repair that is required is cleaning the clock, then make sure that you use electronic cleaner sprays and look for one that has lubricants.
Finally, you may also want to affect some cosmetic car clock repairs such as cleaning the face of the clock and removing dust from the case. Mostly, car clock repair is quite simple and requires that you open, clean and lubricate the clock.Back to Top
